Adios peanuts, see ya in 18+ years
About a month ago I took the kiddo to the allergist to have some testing done since he has shown some signs of allergies and possibly asthma. I was almost 99% sure he was allergic to milk since he could never really take formula without throwing up, he has had lots of eczema, and always seems to be fussier and have tummy troubles when he drinks lots of milk. But alas, all those scratches on his back revealed no milk or soy allergies, just peanuts. It's common to get false positives with scratch tests so they did a blood test to measure his IgE levels in response to peanuts and other nuts and then we went back yesterday to get the results. Thankfully he's ok with almonds, cashews, pecans, etc, but unfortunately his peanut response was pretty high. So now I get to carry these really cool epipens with me wherever I go and read food labels like a maniac (maybe it's a good thing I'm already a pro at that one?).
Part of me wonders if the recommendation to not consume large amounts of peanut butter while pregnant and nursing really is sound advice, since I downed many jars of that luscious, calorically dense food to keep my ravenous appetite at bay over 9 months of pregnancy and 11 months of nursing. Oh well, at least now I have an excuse to buy almond butter because I actually like it even better...I just wish it weren't so expensive! Why, dear trader joe's, can you not come to Utah? I know you think our alcohol regulations are too rigid, but I promise I can more than make up for that lack of revenue by my addiction to your delicious nut butters.

Oh, that's awful! At least it's only peanuts though. Our cousin Matt's son Zack has major allergies to quite a few foods. By the way, I've never heard that about peanut butter. I CANNOT stomach any meat when I'm pregnant so my doctor told me to make sure I eat lots of peanut butter. Hmmm...hopefully I'm not doing any harm to the baby.
Oh Court. You are dealing with exactly the thing I've never wanted to deal with. A child with peanut allergies!
Of course, you'll find ways to go about it. Of course, it'll be easier in some ways than you may be anticipating.
What is it with allergies though? I mean, I have three friends here in Philly alone whose children are all allergic to dairy, peanut, soy, egg, or all!!!!
Seriously, if it makes you feel any better, I do have a good friend whose 18 month old is allergic to dairy, eggs, peanuts and soy. BLAH!
I hear ya. Trader joes has the best almond butter in the world, and it's only 3.59 or something. UTah really needs a Trader Joes. I feel bad for all you Utahns!
Anyways, I'm sorry but at least you KNOW what is causing his eczema and modern technology can help you! I'm sure you'll be learning so much through this experience.
PLUS... aren't they saying now, that it's fairly common for children to outgrow these allergies??
Oh no, poor little Johnny! You are a champion Court to figure it all out. We miss you guys!!!
i have to carry around an epi pen too for me and my lungs.
glad you figured out what was wrong...good luck!
At least it's not all nuts. ( I was thinking it was every kind of nut...) When the farmers market gets going this summer, I will look for almond butter for you. I am pretty sure they have some local people that make it! And we can get a waffle... he he he!
I had to go back and read this because we just found out Claire is allergic to eggs (which I suspected) and... peanuts! BOO! But the peanut test was just a scratch test, so this makes me anxious to have a blood test done (at least, as anxious as you can be about giving your baby a blood test). Mind if I call you sometime to get all your wise, allergy-related thoughts?
